Local Tribe Begins Member Removal Process
Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan Has 3,427 Members
March 27, 2009
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — The Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan has begun the process of removing some members who don’t meet the tribe’s requirements for membership.
The tribal council voted 6-5 on March 17 to begin the process of removing members whose lineage is not correctly traced to the tribe’s historical rolls.
Tribal spokesman Joseph Sowmick said Thursday that the burden of proof will be on tribal authorities to justify removal.
Sowmick declined to say how many of the tribe’s 3,427 members have been identified for possible removal.
